Firsts

Over the last week, the midwives have been making home visits to monitor his feedings, sleeping sequences and weight. He is doing extraordinarily well, weighing in at an ounce above his birth weight, which is good, considering babies tend to lose weight for the first two weeks when outside of the womb.

Eight days old and a few firsts happened in Ivan’s life:

1. He had an out-of-the-house appointment at The Midwifery Collective. I considered getting him dressed-up for the occasion but decided to leave him in his pj’s and saved the “My Daddy Rocks” t-shirt ensemble for another time.
2. At his appointment he passed his hearing test, which is then registered with the Canadian Hearing Society.
3. We went grocery shopping and kept him in the car seat in the cart. He liked the vibration of the cart in motion and slept through the entire experience, except for when the deli counter lady came out to admire him, then he woke up to frown and start in on a cry. Could have been the fluorescent lights or maybe he just didn’t like her hairnet.
4. The umbilical cord fell off this morning. I had to dispose of this while I thought of it because apparently cats are fond of baby jerky.

As progressions develop, we’ll report on them. He is a very interesting study that boy of ours.
